Biography
Anjan Ghosh
I am a documentary photographer based in Kolkata, India, exploring people, places and everyday life across Bengal and beyond.
I was born in Barrackpore, West Bengal, and have spent many years travelling through villages, towns and working communities across India. Bengal remains at the heart of my photographic practice.
I am drawn to ordinary lives — people at work, traditional crafts, children growing up in rural communities, religious practices, festivals and the quiet moments that often go unnoticed.
I do not photograph people simply to show hardship. I am interested in their individuality — their dignity, relationships, work, beliefs, humour and the ways they create a life in the places they call home.
For me, photography begins with curiosity. I spend time, listen and observe. I often return to the same places, allowing relationships and trust to develop. The photograph comes when something unexpected reveals itself.
Artistic Vision
Photography as Long-Term Observation
Photography begins long before the shutter is released. It grows through presence, patience, listening and the willingness to return. My work is rooted in relationships — with people, places and the changing landscapes around them. I look for photographs that leave room for the viewer to pause and look again. Rather than explaining everything, I want my images to reveal something about everyday life, human connection and the character of a place.
“I do not photograph hardship. I photograph people, their dignity, and the lives they build.”
— Anjan Ghosh, Documentary Photographer
Patience
Meaningful photographs take time. I stay, observe and wait for the moment to reveal itself.
Trust
A photograph begins with respect. I build trust before I raise the camera.
Observation
The smallest gestures can reveal something much larger about a person and their world.
Context
A person is inseparable from the place, culture and circumstances that shape their life.
Integrity
I photograph people as individuals, with their dignity, complexity and humanity at the centre.
Curiosity
I keep looking, asking questions and returning—because every place has more than one story to tell.
