Living Traditions — West Bengal, India, 2025
A young boy sits quietly beneath the shelter of an ancient tree, holding a traditional folk mask that embodies generations of cultural memory. Bathed in warm afternoon light, the image reflects the delicate balance between innocence and heritage, where the stories of the past find their guardians in the children of today. Part of Anjan Ghosh's ongoing documentary work, this photograph explores the enduring relationship between people, tradition, and place.
The performance had ended, and the crowd had begun to disperse. Away from the applause, I found a young boy sitting beneath a tree, gently holding a traditional mask that moments earlier had come alive through dance. There was no performance left—only silence. In that quiet moment, the mask was no longer a prop but a symbol of inheritance. It reminded me that every cultural tradition survives because someone chooses to carry it forward. I waited for the light to settle before making the photograph. The calm expression of the child, the textured roots of the tree, and the still water nearby created a sense of timelessness that echoed the spirit of rural Bengal. For me, this image is about more than folklore. It speaks of memory, identity, and the invisible thread that connects one generation to the next. It is a reminder that traditions do not live in museums—they live in people.
