Human Landscapes — 2020

Land & Labour — West Bengal, India, 2019
A lone farmer walks through the paddy fields beneath an immense open sky, carrying the tools of his daily work. The vast landscape emphasizes both the scale of nature and the quiet determination of those whose lives are shaped by it. Part of Anjan Ghosh's documentary series exploring the dignity of rural labour and humanity's enduring connection with the land.
The morning was still, interrupted only by the sound of wind moving through the paddy fields. In the distance, I noticed a farmer walking alone along a narrow path, carrying his baskets as he headed toward another day's work. What struck me was not the figure itself, but the relationship between the man and the landscape. The endless sky seemed to dwarf him, yet his steady stride gave the scene a quiet sense of purpose. There was no rush, no spectacle—only the rhythm of a life shaped by the seasons. I chose a low perspective to allow the sky to dominate the frame, placing the farmer as a small but unwavering presence within it. The composition speaks of humility, resilience, and the silent dignity of agricultural life. To me, this photograph is about hope. Every journey across a field begins with faith that the land will provide, reminding us that the future is often built one quiet step at a time.
